Ceremony Pays Tribute to Wisconsin Veterans Killed and Missing in Action

Veterans Day is a time to remember and appreciate those who serve, and those who have died or are missing in action.

Join the Highground’s annual Veterans Day ceremony on Saturday, November 11. Beginning at noon, over 2,000 names will be read and honored with the toll of the Liberty Bell. These names include the 1,244 Wisconsin KIAs/MIAs in the Vietnam War and 877 of the Wisconsin KIAs/MIAs in the Korean War.

Later at 3 p.m., the hour-long Veterans Day ceremony will begin outside on the plaza or in the Learning Center if the weather is too cold. Speakers will include Iola veteran John Black, general manager Jon Weiler, also a retired member of the U.S Army Reserve, and Vietnam veteran Steve Maddox of the Highground Board of Directors.

The Thorp VFW #9057 will provide the Color Guard and rifle salute, and there will be a performance of “Taps.” Students from the Rural Virtual Academy will read some of their poetry. Names of servicemen and women from Wisconsin who have died in Persian Gulf conflicts will be read during the ceremony.

Attendees can also check out the current display in the Learning Center, called “Window to a Veterans Soul” by Jeffrey Stenbom. It features kiln glass sculptures representing the artist’s struggle with PTSD after serving in Iraq.
