Exploring Historic Wausau Dining Establishment

by Kaylin Speth

Tucked conveniently around the corner from the Wausau Center is a staple of local history revered by the locals. The Mint Café earns its status partly from its impressive age (it was founded in 1888), making it a familiar downtown nook for generations of customers. It also has really good pie.

mint-cafe-wausauLocated on Third Street, the Mint Café boasts old-fashioned charm with counters and stools reminiscent of a classic American diner, written daily specials, and a cozy, buzzing atmosphere. Relics of a long history line the walls, and while sliding into a green booth with an old framed menu, one can ponder a day when coffee was only twenty cents and a hamburger plate could be had for a mere dollar.

The modern menu is pleasantly varied. Hearty meat dinners, gourmet sandwiches, and designer burgers make up the fare. There is also an extensive breakfast selection.

Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available. Accompany the meal with a cup of good coffee, or even wine and beer.

But save room for the pie.

The Mint Café offers catering. All menus can be found at their website, www.mintcafewausau.com.
