All-Community Musical Auditions in Late May
Curtain up! Lights up! In a break with tradition, the LuCille Tack Center for the Arts will be presenting a musical this fall cast with community members from both within and outside Spencer. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, will be presented by arrangement with The Musical Company, LP and directed by Spencer High School alumna Elaine Jones. This will be Jones’ fifth show at the Tack.
Anyone willing to drive to Spencer for rehearsals at least three nights a week is welcome to audition for thirteen male and thirteen female roles. Students who are in seventh grade or older and have viable transportation are also invited to try-out. Open auditions will take place Tuesday, May 29 beginning at 4:00 pm and Thursday, May 31 beginning at 5 pm in the LuCille Tack Center for the Arts. If you cannot meet either of these times, please call 715.659.4499 and another time will be arranged. All roles require singing, so those auditioning should bring their choice of music with them, or it will be provided. Sixty seconds of material is sufficient. An accompanist will be available.
For those who are cast, dance rehearsals may begin in late August, with stage rehearsals for the production beginning September 10. Performances will take place November 2, 3 and 4.
The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father’s favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar’s wife lands him in jail.
When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.
In addition to acting roles, a youth choir will be selected in the fall. Individuals are also needed to assist the director, build sets, play in the orchestra, costume, and supervise make-up and publicity.
